More than 240 million people across 40 states are in the path of a historic winter storm that's expected to deliver crippling snow and ice, across the U.S. But this isn't the first time the country has faced severe ice storms.

Earth's magnetic field was struck by a "severe" solar storm Monday (Jan. 19), triggering vibrant auroras in the U.S. and large parts of Europe. The storm broke a record that had stood for more than two decades.

Though forecasters are calling for a crippling 12 to 18 inches of snow across much of the state, this weekend’s winter storm probably won’t break any snowfall records for New Jersey. But just because forecasters don’t think this weekend’s snow will be one for the record books doesn’t mean it won’t be compared to some Garden State storms that were blockbusters.
