The winter storm barreling across the southeastern United States this weekend could cancel thousands of flights and disrupt air traffic for more than a week.

The "potentially historic" winter storm headed toward the Mid-South is already causing disruptions at Memphis International Airport.

"This will likely result in thousands of flight cancellations on Saturday, Sunday and Monday," said Dan DePodwin, vice president of forecasting operations at AccuWeather, in a statement.
