Boeing has delivered layoff notices to more than 400 members of its professional aerospace labor union, part of thousands of cuts planned as the company struggles to recover from financial and regulatory trouble as well as an eight-week strike by its machinists' union.

Aerospace firm Boeing, one of the largest employers in the St. Louis region, is laying off more than 100 local workers.

Boeing started issuing layoff notices Wednesday to 17,000 employees to cut 10% of its workforce in an effort to shore up the aerospace giant's shaky finances.

The layoffs were mostly due to Boeing delaying production on the long-range widebody 777X commercial jet, Adams said. Workers in the St. Louis region build component parts for that plane.

The St. Louis Business Journal reports that Boeing laid off 111 union workers in the area. The layoffs are part of larger cuts throughout the company, which is eliminating 17,000
