Update: I-55 back open in north Mississippi, MDOT says
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Interstate 55 is back open after it was closed to clear icy roads that led to a major traffic backup, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said just before 3 p.m. Thursday. Crews are still clearing both directions of I-55 north of Como (Exit 257).
Interstate 55 was shut down Wednesday afternoon after Winter Storm Fern coated north Mississippi in ice and snow, with northbound lanes closed from Exit 206 in Grenada to Exit 265 in Senatobia beginning at 1 p.m., state transportation officials said.
Vehicles are stalled and stranded on Interstate 55 around Batesville, and the governor is calling on resources to help drivers. Gov. Tate Reeves said Wednesday morning that emergency crews worked through the night to help stranded passenger and commercial drivers and clear the interstates.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As officials work to clear stranded motorists from Interstate 55 and Interstate 22 in North Mississippi as a result of the impact of winter weather, the Mississippi Department of Safety released an update on progress.
