No Pete Alonso, no problem. The 2025 Home Run Derby got a massive power boost Tuesday when Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz was announced for the event. Cruz will join a suddenly stacked group of power hitters in the contest, which includes Cal Raleigh, James Wood, Byron Buxton and Ronald Acuña Jr.
Cruz, 26, will join Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh and Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. as the latest participants in the annual slugging contest.
Fittingly, it was none other than Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. who was named as the first entrant into the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, as he’ll be swinging for the fences in front of his home fans when Truist Park hosts the Derby on July 14.
Tampa Bay Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday in Atlanta, then learned hours later he will start at third base for the AL squad in the All-Star Game the following night.
