The San Jose City Council has opted to fill the District 3 vacancy through a special election and interim appointment.

Authorities in San Jose on Wednesday provided details about new charges against former City Councilmember Omar Torres involving the sexual assault of a young relative that led to his arrest on Election Day.

Disgraced San Jose city councilmember Omar Torres was denied bail in a San Jose courtroom on Thursday. Torres resigned from his office last Tuesday and was arrested after new allegations came forward about him allegedly sexually assaulting a minor.

The former city councilmember faces three child sexual abuse charges and up to two decades in prison if convicted.
