Dare County artist James Melvin's portrait of Darrell McNary Collins, "A Legacy of Greatness," honors the late founder and president of Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. Melvin gifted the portrait to Collins' wife, Tonya. Darrell Collins was an acclaimed historian and interpreter of the Wright brothers' first flight; a former Town of Manteo commissioner and mayor pro tem; and a historian of the Pea Island Life-Saving Station crew, members of which were his relatives.
